West Indies batted brilliantly on a surface that was meant to bat on against India in their semifinal game. On the other hand, England batsmen also thrashed the Kiwis on a supporting wicket as they chased down 154 runs target in just 17.1 overs. So, who’s going to end up on top in the big Final?
A performance that was given by the Caribbean side in the semifinal was very much expected from them considering the way they have been winning right throughout the tournament. It was a batting wicket and their bashers had the green card in their hand to attack from the word go. Yes, luck did favor them but it happens in big games like these.
While chasing down a massive target of 193 runs, the middle order responded brilliantly after early dismissal of Gayle and Samuels. Johnson Charles was also ecstatic at the top, playing a brilliant knock of 52 runs off just 36 balls. Simmons remained unbeaten at 82, surviving a few close calls, and Russell was also not out at 43 off just 20 balls. Even though 22-yards in Kolkata will not be as good as in Mumbai, but West Indians will still be expected to play their A game and end up on the winning stand.
The bowlers weren’t really on top in the last match and most of them were quite expensive. But this was very much on the cards as it was a flat deck. However, Badree bowled reasonably well picking up 1 for 26 in his 4 overs. Russell picked up a wicket as well. They will be their main strikers against England as well.
England struggled early on in the Super 10 stage but they really came back hard to seal the spot in the semis and then stunned everyone with their brilliant performance with the bat in Semifinal against a side that was unbeaten throughout the tournament. Jason Roy was their standout performer with the bat in the semifinal as he stole the show with his 44-ball 78 runs which really set up that emphatic win for the Englishmen.
Hales also added a handy 20 and then Root and Buttler finished it for England with their unbeaten 27 and 32. The worry for England is that their captain, Eoin Morgan, hasn’t really fired in the tournament so far and he got a golden duck in the semifinal as well. Considering everything going well for England in their batting, captain will also have to come up with a big performance in the final.
However, he did pulled things back in favor of England when on the field. At one stage, New Zealand were cruising having scored 100-plus in just 12 overs but then Morgan controlled things quite brilliantly by reducing them to 153 for 8 in 20 overs. Ben Stokes was the pick of the bowler for England with 3 for 26 in his 4. They will expect better contributions from Willey, Rashid and Jordan in the Final, however.
Sammy didn’t bowl or bat again in the semifinal as well but got the result in his favor yet again. So, he’ll be expecting things to go the same as long as they can win it.
He failed again with the bat in semifinal but lead his side brilliantly in the latter part of first innings. He utilized his options wonderfully to restrict New Zealand inside a reasonable total.
West Indies won it emphatically against India and will be the favorites. However, the way England batted against Kiwis should not be overlooked at all. It’ll be a close contest for sure.
The ball gripped on a slow wicket in Kolkata in the last match played here and it will offer some support to bowlers yet again. It’ll be partly cloudy and 33° C max.
